Curry will be making his fifth appearance at the tournament and will be joined by his teammate and Splash Brother Klay Thompson, as well as his father, Dell. Well known as an accomplished golfer, Curry’s best finish was in 2013 when he led the tournament with seven holes remaining before finishing fourth. Steph’s looking to avenge last year’s one-point loss to his father and another year of trash talk. (The tournament features a modified Stableford scoring format awarding points.)
Steph is listed at 20-1 by the Harrah’s and Harveys Race & Sports Book. Klay Thompson’s odds to win are 40 to 1, and Dell at 30 to 1.
The 28th annual tournament has raised more than $4 million for multiple national and area charities and offers free admission to military personnel and guests. With major television exposure (NBC Sports, NBCSN, Golf Channel) and a purse of $600,000, the American Century Championship is the most prestigious celebrity tournament in golf. The 2017 event tees off Friday-Sunday July 14-16 at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course, a Golf Digest Top 100 rated course on the shores of the largest alpine lake in North America.
An outstanding high school golfer in North Carolina, Curry made his American Century Championship debut in 2010 following his rookie NBA season and finished tied for 28th place behind Michael Jordan (22nd), Marshall Faulk (18th) and Mark Rypien (6th).
Curry will make the 200-mile journey from the Bay Area to South Lake Tahoe just weeks after the Warriors’ victory in the NBA Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers, their second championship in three years.
He will join a prominent lineup of more than 90 celebrities, including actor and musical artist Justin Timberlake, TNT NBA analyst Charles Barkley, former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and newly anointed lead color commentator for CBS on NFL games, NFL MVP and Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and NFL Hall of Famers Jerry Rice, Steve Young, Emmitt Smith, Marshall Faulk, John Elway, Marcus Allen and Tim Brown. Two-time champion Mark Mulder will chase a three-peat, while Larry the Cable Guy, Jared Goff, Alex Smith, Al Michaels, Jason Kidd, Herm Edwards, Charles Woodson, Carson Palmer will also compete.

Practice rounds got underway on Tuesday for the 2017 American Century Championship, which again promises to put some of the biggest names in athletics and entertainment against each other for a good cause.
Golden State Warriors star point guard Stephen Curry is one huge name that will grace the green at Edgewood Tahoe South Golf Course in the name of charity. Curry is just one of many huge names coming together to compete in this year’s lauded celebrity golf tournament, one that has been running yearly since 1990.
The American Century Championship has worked hard with devoted athletes and celebrities to raise nearly $5 million for a variety of non-profit organizations over the last 27 years, with popular charities such as Autism Speaks, Boys & Girls Club and Fallen Patriot Fund taking center stage.
While the mission on hand is obvious, the secondary aim is for everyone to enjoy a light week of festivities and friendly competition. Golf fans can follow the action and join in on the fun by wagering which big name stars could come away with the ACC crown.
2017 American Century Championship Odds
Former MLB pitcher Mark Mulder won the event last year and will actually be shooting for a third consecutive win. The 39-year old former pitcher is one of six players to have won at least twice and a third title at Edgewood Tahoe South would move him into third place for career wins, all-time.
That would put him just behind former Canadian golfer Dan Quinn (5) and former NFL quarterback Billy Joe Tolliver (4), while professional golfer Rick Rhoden leads the way with 8 career American Century Championship wins.
We’re expected to have a loaded field when the action gets started on Friday morning, while numerous big names will be on hand. Mulder returns as the early favorite to defend his title, but former Dallas Cowboys star quarterback Tony Romo – known for his love of golf – is pegged as his top threat with the second best American Century Championship odds at Bovada. Here’s the full list:
|
|
Mulder naturally leads the way as the two-time defending champion, but we should also pay mind to a few other former winners heading into the weekend. Actor Jack Wagner won in 2006 and 2011 and remains the only non-athlete to ever win this event.
Mark Rypien is another familiar name we need to pay mind to, as the former Washington Redskins great has also won here twice, taking first in the first ever American Century tourney in 1990 and winning again in 2014.
The Field
I don’t know if betting on the field guarantees us anything, as Bovada lists a very good chunk of the top threats to win this event. That being said, a full list of the top celebrities that will be on hand for this tournament includes names not mentioned in the latest odds. If you research some of these celebrities, perhaps you can uncover a gem and make a solid pick in favor of the field.
Professional Golfers
While past winners obviously need to be monitored ahead of placing your American Century bets, we also need to be careful not to let any former or current professional golfing talent slip through the cracks.
Former army vet Chad Pfeifer is a viable sleeper to consider, as the aspiring pro golfer finished 5th at this very event in 2014 and also became the first veteran amputee to compete on the PGA Tour. His talent and drive (as well as his appealing +3300 odds) make him a solid sleeper worth taking a flier on, as well as worth rooting for.
Other golfing talent we need to watch out for is professional golfer Paige Spiranac, Blair O’Neal and Lisa Cornwell. No woman has ever taken first at the ACC, but all three are embedded into the professional golf fabric and shouldn’t be ignored.
Big Name Threats
Mulder, Wagner and Rypien are all big name threats that have won before, but we also need to pay mind to Tony Romo and Stephen Curry. Both have been aligned with the golfing world for years and have displayed considerable talent in the sport.
Former pitchers tend to thrive on the green, as well, so beyond Mulder, we also should be careful not to quickly ignore the likes of John Smoltz, Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux, David Wells and easily the bigger name to grace the mound – Roger Clemens. Clemens offers the most value of these former MLB arms at +10000, but isn’t really viewed as a realistic threat to compete for first place.
Other big name threats we seriously need to consider are former NHL star Jeremy Roenick and former tennis star, Mardy Fish. Fish actually came in second place last year, while Roenick settled in at fourth.
Marshall Faulk Celebrity Golf Tournament
Worthy Long Shots
Marshall Faulk Golf Tournament 2017 Bracket
The best long shot that stands out the most is probably Alfonso Ribeiro, who is best known for playing Carlton on Fresh Prince. He’d be fun to bet on just for the nostalgia, but he actually could have a shot at storming the castle after finishing 13th here in 2016. At +5500, he’s not the worst long shot to consider.
For true long shots, we’re probably looking at options at +7500 or greater, of course. In that area we should probably pay mind to Joe Theisman above all others. The former NFL quarterback finished 24th here in 2015 and 30th in 2016. He’s not a reliable play, but he’s at least been competitive in a loaded field and at +10000 the risk is trumped by the potential reward.
Who Will Win the 2017 American Century Championship?
It would be really easy to roll with the returning champ and back Mark Mulder, go with a different former winner or back a former athlete known for their golfing prowess like Romo or Curry.
Heck, maybe that’s where the best bet really does lie. It would be nice to see a non-athlete or a female take this thing, too. However, history tells us that probably won’t happen, so we need to gun for someone with playable odds and a realistic chance to win.
All roads lead us back to Chad Pfeifer, who obviously has the talent to perform at the highest level and is still very much in his golfing prime at just 32 years of age. He’s also fared quite well at the American Century Championship, finishing 9th in 2015 and 5th in 2014. Not only does Pfeifer give us fun +3300 odds and has a strong golfing background, but he has two top-10 finishes here and also gives us a terrific feel-good story in an event that backs amazing causes.
Mulder, Romo and Curry are three awesome secondary bets we love due to their talent and odds, but our favorite pick going into the weekend is Pfeifer.
